What kind of paint should I use to paint a wooden TV stand?

So I've won this mount on ebay, but want to paint in black change and the commanders of a brushed nickel. Do I have to prepare first? What kind of paint should I use? I do not want a sticky, shiny high gloss finish, I do not want to be flat.
