How will you know it is Honduras mahogany?
Mahogany is a type of hardwood that is usually reddish brown in color. It is a vital component in any construction or in furniture making. It has many varieties to its name and each has its own characteristics. In knowing whether one is genuine mahogany, it pays to look at the durability, workability and stability of the material. Sometimes, the mahogany species forms part of the criteria as well. One type you may be interested to know about is Honduras mahogany. Below are some of the traits of this mahogany variety. Before anything else though, a brief introduction for the species is needed. Honduras mahogany comes from the family of Swietenia macrophylla. Belonging to the said family makes everybody conclude that it is genuine mahogany. This is because when comparing between Swietenia and Khaya (another mahogany family), the former is often referred to as genuine or true mahogany. Additionally, the variety that comes from South America has colors that range from salmon to dark reddish brown. These color hues make it naturally attractive. What makes Honduras mahogany standout is the fact that it is really durable. It is inherently capable of resisting decay and at the same time it also resists insects from infesting the hardwood. This makes it indeed a genuine mahogany. With grains that are straight and evenly textured, it is beautifully crafted as part of furniture or any construction work piece. In fact, when placed under a machine, the material renders a good output. A lot of people also favor it because it is an excellent material for any type of finish. Workability wise, Honduras mahogany stands out from other varieties. You may ask why? It is because it is easy to have the material cut into any piece that will deem fit for any of its applications. Simply put, it can be carved or shaped according to your specifications. This genuine mahogany is recommended especially in the field of precise woodworking like cabinet making and boat building. With proper drying techniques used like air-seasoning or kiln drying, the material will not distort at all. In consonance with this feature of Honduras mahogany, it is also workable because it is an ideal species or material for cutting or planing. When planing, it is recommended to use sharp tools to produce the precise cut for a wavy grain pattern. All positive things can be said about this genuine mahogany specifically because it is perfect for sanding. With the aid of any turning tools for woodwork, the workability of the material becomes undeniably appreciated by many. Traits of Honduras mahogany increase the demand for the material. Now, it is considered a very valuable crop in most if not all South American countries. Plantation farms are now being considered to produce the lumber from this genuine mahogany variety. Be very particular with another type marketed as mahogany in these areas – the Lauan. This is not the true mahogany you are looking for. It is considered an imposter because although it poses to have some of the features of mahogany, it actually comes from other wood varieties.

Some of the colleges offer 2 year programs in fine woodworking (Furniture Making) not house framing, cabinet construction etc., (Carpentry), which is a a 4 year apprentice program, offered by many colleges.
North Bennet Street School in Boston is widely considered to be the most elite and rigorous. Long waiting list to get in.

There are some entry requirements for Camosun's program: a portfolio of some things you've made (doesn't have to be in wood) & a basic test of your command of English and math skills. Expect it's similar in other colleges. This is the college I'm familiar with.
A wonderful, satisfying art. Go for it! . . .
