Bathroom Wall Cabinets Create Space Out Of Nothing
There are no two ways about it, bathrooms, washrooms, and powder rooms always seem to be short of storage space. Most folks find it necessary to maximize storage by taking advantage of every square inch, every nook and cranny, and every corner. One of the best, most efficient, and most dramatic improvements you can make in your bath or powder room is with the addition of a bathroom wall cabinet.
The beauty of these wall mounted cabinets is that they utilize space that otherwise would be completely wasted, making them an ideal solution for your washroom storage needs. You can add shelf space for things like linens and towels, washcloths, bedsheets, etc., or you can use them for toiletries and pharamceuticals, shampoos, soaps, hairspray, and the like.
Of course, choosing one of these flexible, useful cabinets is a very personal decision, and needs to be based on your own personal decorating tastes, as well as on the existing decor of the room. Everything from contemporary and modern to rustic and traditioanl is available, in materials from wood to steel, to acrylic. Don't be fooled by a cabinet's seeming plain looks - even the plainest finish can be dramatically improved with a little paint or stain, if you are of the DIY (do it yourself) mindset.
Installing these space-adding fixtures is often as simple as screwing them to the wall, but make certain you know what you are doing, and that you attach yours firmly to a couple of wall studs to support the weight you will most certainly be adding to the unit. If you don't feel confident doing the install your self, why not consider hiring a professional to do the job for you? That way, you will insure the safety of everyone who will ultimately be using the room, and the good looks of the final job.

Can IKEA furniture be reliably reinforced?
I really want to get the Expedit TV cabinet, which can be found on IKEA's web site. This would be a perfect fit for my apartment and storage/media needs. The only problem is, after contacting IKEA, their product specifications state that the shelf is only able to support a TV up to 100 pounds in weight. My TV is 120 pounds. Does anyone know if this 20 pound differential would truly be a problem? If so, is it possible to reinforce the entertainment center in such a way to make the extra weight not a problem? How?
Thanks,
Sam
You can always reinforce a cabinet by gluing blocks in the corners (where the right angle joints are), by putting in a doubled shelf or gluing a stiffening rib down the underside of a shelf, and the like. Your TV no doubt is a stiff rectangle, without a lot of bend in the middle, so it's really the edges that get the strain, near where they are attached to the upright sides. If a 120 pound person sat on the middle of the shelf, that would be a lot different. so if you reinforce those side joints, and make sure your cabinet has a back or some kind of bracing so it doesn't wobble side to side, you should be OK.
20% is not that much more, and a little reinforcing should be worth a try.
After looking at the cabinet's picture, I can see that you will need diagonal bracing for the whole shelving unit, or you need to attach it to a wall with brackets. Doubling the shelf would be a good idea, and screw and glue the two shelves together so that they are one piece. then 1x1 rectangular or triangular blocks between the underside shelf edges and the sides, glued and fastened tight with screws.
