Kitchen Cabinets That Exude Classic Style
Merriam-Webster defines the adjective classic as "serving as a standard of excellence"; "traditional, enduring"; and "characterized by simple tailored lines in fashion year after year." In the midst of a recession like the current one, style and appeal that will last for years to come is more important to homeowners than ever before.
It's not surprising then that Kitchen and Bath Design News recently featured "Classic Cabinets" in its Product Trend Report. The article cited a recent survey that revealed "the current economic climate has made today's consumers not only more price sensitive, but has also impacted style and design trends." In particular, "consumers are trending toward simpler, more classic [kitchen cabinet] styles that offer the look and organization they desire, along with good value."
When it comes to kitchen cabinetry the four most important factors currently driving consumers are value, sustainability, function and quality. Enduring classic and simple cabinets are in and here-today, gone-tomorrow cabinetry trends are out. If you're considering remodeling your kitchen, what will make your kitchen cabinets appear classic and therefore more likely to increase your home's value?
1. Clean and simple lines - Shaker door styles in warm rather than contemporary cool tones are topping homeowners' wish lists. Slab Kitchen Cabinet Doors without recessed panels and fancy arches provide this simplicity, as do warm hues like honey spice, caramel and burnished ginger.

Can I restain my cabinets a darker color without sanding first?
I dont have the mechanical know-how or tools to remove the cabinets, sand them and then stain them... Can I just remove the doors and hardware and stain the cabinets in place? They are the classic oak color with darker wood grain, I would be staining them as dark as I can, hopefully a reddish mahogany.
I know its prolly not the "right" way to do it, but my dad doesnt want to come help me and hes the only person I know who could help. He doesnt want to because he says "your cabinets are fine, theres nothing wrong with them, I like the color of them"... But to me they are ugly and out of date, I would like them to be a rich dark brown
Well, can I tell you that Im female, and managed to do this and
you can do it to. I have been working on my cabinets for about
6 months. One section at a time. I didnt stain, I sanded and repainted,
but another home I had, I did sand the stain off and primed and painted over.
I sanded, buy a mouse sander, they are cheap and will help. I also
bought Elmers glue brand hole filler , to fill the old holes the hinges
made.sanded again. Then I primed and painted twice, and ordered new hardware from
historic houseparts and all I can say is WOW.
Dont be in a hurry. Take your time, do things slow, ask questions.
Ask your dad to help by telling you what steps to take.
I have one more section to go and my cabinets look just as good
as my neighbor who just spent thousands of dollars on theirs.
Mine are better, real wood and original to the house.
But the reason I commented is because you do have the mechanical
know how.. you just dont know it yet.. trust me.
oh, one more thing..buy the BEST brush that you can,
a cheap paint brush will make the job look crappy.
If you have 2, then you can clean one and use the other
while the other is drying out. And do your work on a table somewhere
that your not worried about. I used a piece of plywood and
set plastic coaters under the cabinet so the paint wouldnt
stick to the plywood table. When it was dry, I flipped it over.
If you paint with the cabinets on,
the stain or paint may run and make streaks.
