Cookers 101 – Gas or electric?
Are you reaching that age where it's really time to move out of your folks' house and find your own digs? Or maybe you are just seeking to replace the old-as-the-hills cooker provided to you by your landlord as standard? Whichever is true, the following notes should aid you in your choice between gas and electric cookers.
Cost:
Even though electric cookers actually use less units of energy than gas versions, electric units are more costly than gas units and as such, gas cookers are the cheaper of the two options.
In regards to initial purchase price, it really depends more on the brand and model choice than it does the fuel it is ran on. Obviously though, the more money you are willing to spend the higher the quality your appliance is likely to be.
Practicality:
Electric cookers are generally more popular than gas these days but many argue that the moist cooking environment of gas cooking provides better tasting results.
Gas hobs heat up saucepans far quick than electric ovens can, though it is worth noting that pan hobs on an electric are far easier to clean a simple wipe is often enough, whereas gas hobs need the weighty pan stands removed first (and these often need cleaning themselves too).
Range cookers can also be bought by those cooking aficionados who decide that they wish to have both types of fuel cooking (for example, a combination of gas hob and electric ovens) for a range of dishes and cooking options. There are even Britannia cookers available on the market that include an integrated deep fat fryer and/or rotisseries. One of these deluxe appliances will set you back almost four thousand pounds but is a great investment for those foodies that can afford it.
Installation:
Any gas cooker MUST be installed by a member of the Council for Registered Gas Installers (CORGI). It is not a DIY task. Wrong installation can be extremely hazardous and this can also void your warranty. It is not advisable to attempt to install your own electric cooker either, since these appliances require their own radial circuit separate from the rest of your homes' electrical circuit. You should seek the skills of a professional.
