How do I keep my bedroom door from opening when you push on it?
my door won't stay locked. I close it but if you push it, it opens. it won't stay latched. You don't have to turn the door knob to open it. If I pulled the door up as I am closing it, it will stay latched. Please help!!!!!!
Your door is out of adjustment. (the clue is that you have to lift up on the door to get it to latch) Simply tightening the hinge screw will not correct the problem.
If the door is not too far out of adjustment, you may be able to just move the strike plate down a bit, so that the door will latch.
Stand inside, and push the door closed... check the gap along the top of the door, and down the knob side. Is it straight? Or does it get larger from one end to the other? (Im guessing that the gap gets larger along the top edge of the door, from the hinge side to the knob side). If the change in the gap is over 1/4", I'd suggest its time to adjust the door.
To adjust the door, you'll need to pull the trim off of one face of the jamb. (Some jambs are split, if you have this kind, then the trim, and half the jamb will all come out together.) Once you can get at the wall opening, you can see where the jamb is shimmed. You'll probably need to shift the top of the door jamb towards the hinge side..so it may be necessary to remove some shims at that top corner) Use a 4ft level to check for plumb, and adjust the jamb accordingly. If the top of the door (hinge side) cannot be moved any further in that direction, then it will be necessary to move bottom of the door frame in the opposite direction. Be sure to keep the opening at the proper spacing for the door to fit correctly (meaning you may need to adjust both vertical jambs). I like to use a 3" screw in the center hole of each hinge, so that it anchors into the stud. (Many pre-hung doors have only 3/4" screws). Once the door jamb has been shimmed and secured, you can put the trim back in place.
I've had a lot of practice at making this kind of adjustment, and an interior door takes about 45 minutes usually.
The simpler approach, as I mentioned earlier, is to move the strike plate down a bit. If the jamb is drilled out for the latch, then it may be necessary to chisel out the bottom of the hole just a bit. This type of adjustment can be done in about 10 minutes.
