Best Jewelry Boxes-How to Take Care Of A Jewelry Box

Your jewelry box protects your jewelry and treasures.  So who protects your jewelry box?  Dust, environmental pollutants, sunlight and oils from your body can cause your jewelry box to appear dull or faded.

Wood jewelry boxes need special care or over time they can become nicked and scratched.  To take care of your jewelry box you should dust it often.  This keeps the wood shiny and it keeps the box looking new.  As with any wood nick knacks or furniture, dust accumulates on wood and can make it look dirty and unappealing.

Another good way to keep your jewelry box looking its best is to polish it with a wood furniture polish cleaner.  We all love the smell of a good wood cleaner and after we swipe that rag across the box, the shine is amazing.  The reason we chose the box in the first place was for how it great it looked and how it adorns the dresser or bureau top.  We want to not only make sure it still looks good, we want to make sure to preserve the wood.

If you jewelry box is scratched or nicked you might consider, refinishing it by sanding out the scratches with a fine sandpaper.  Choose a very fine grain that works on the type of wood used in your box.  You can find it at your local hardware store and the sales assistant should be able to help you find the right type to use.  But once you sand it, the scratch may be gone, but now you will have a rough, dull spot on the box.  To correct this you will want to also purchase a finish that matches your box.  If you can take the box with you to the store, they should be able to help you find a good match.

When sanding the scratch, tread lightly.  You do not want to dig a hole where the scratch was.  A light sanding should take it right out.  Then you should run the sandpaper over the entire box taking, until the box all looks about the same tone.  It should just look a little dusty and not as shiny as before.  Once you do this, the box is ready for the finish.  Using a small brush and a little bit of finish, paint it over the scratch first, saturating it nicely and then smooth it out over the entire box.  Two coats might be required.  Let it dry and voila – the box will look brand new.

But prevention is the best medicine.  Keep your jewelry box out of the sun.  Even though it is usually kept inside, sun does shine through the windows and can fade the box.  Keep it also away from water by not keeping it in the bathroom near the sink.  Water splashing on the box can erode it over time, and can cause the closures to become tarnished or damaged.

Protect your jewelry box and it will last a lifetime.  Treat it as a work of art, not just a box to hold your jewelry.  This precious piece is a keepsake that can be handed down through the generations.
