Fish Pond Heater- Why Should You Buy a Pond Heater?

Koi ponds were previously heated only by high end Koi keepers. It used to be very expensive and Koi for the most part were mainly kept in climates that did not need heating in the cold months. A significant decrease in cost of heating of pond has motivated people living in colder regions to create a Koi pond.

My advice to most Koi owners is unless you live in the warmest of climates, consider heating your pond. Get the best pond heater that you can find. Heating the pond does not just mean keeping it away from ice, a minimum of 54 to 57 degree Fahrenheit temperature is required. Doing this will rid you off problems that may arise due to temperature fluctuations and your Koi will not face any feeding problems. Heating could prevent many and safeguard the health of your fish. Fishes are like investments and therefore it is important to protect them.

There are basically two ways to heat your Koi pond. The simplest to install and most efficient is the inline electric water heater. The heater is fitted into the return pipe after the external pump if one is used in a gravity-fed system. With one kw of electrical power, the heater can easily heat up 1000 gallons of water. Other factors such as the water’s ambient temperature also play an important role. I always suggest getting a heater a little more powerful than you need so that it won't have to run continuously in the coldest months. A Pond De-Icer is a perfect device for your pond in the coming fall and winter months.

You may also use a heat exchanger system. It is preferred because of its operating cost, even though it is expensive to buy and install. The pond water is pumped out of heat exchanger similar to that done by a radiator. The water in the radiator is heated by a small boiler that is fired by natural gas, electricity or oil.

Covering the Koi pond is always a good idea during winter months, weather you heat the Koi pond or not. Make sure that the pond covering is not air tight. Covering with zipped opening allows exchange of air which is equally important for fishes as well as for exchange of build up gas.

Most Landscape Design Calgary would ask you to consider getting a pond heater. There's nothing wrong with in since it will definitely be perfect for your pond.
