Can shower door hardware be refinished?

I purchased new Oil Rubbed Bronze fixtures for my bathroom. The problem is that the shower/bath enclosure doors have very ugly, shiny brass hardware (sliding door track, frame, handles, etc). I swear I once saw a home improvement show where they just painted the hardware (spray paint) to update the look. However, when I ask at home improvement places, they tell me that would not work. I'd rather invest $20 in paint and apply some elbow grease rather than spend $250 on a new door. What might work?

I have sprayed plastic, wood, and metal to match finishes I already had. There is a slogan out there that goes, "If it doesn't move, paint it!" Of course you can paint the hardware! Make sure you buy a can of spray that goes on metal, mask off the other parts of the door, and spray. Even if it only lasts a year, cheap! Just respray.
