My washer stopped working in the middle of a load.?

It was working just fine with no problems, then all the sudden it stopped. When I pull the knob out so it will start to run, it makes a sound like it wants to and then just starts humming quietly, but doesn't do anything. It is full of water and I can't get it to spin or drain or anything at all. Can anybody give me any suggestions or is the thing just all done. It isn't that old but has had a lot of use.
