What is the differences between all the types of metal polishing compounds?

I am planning to start polishing metal items with my new 6" bench buffer, but I see that the compounds (solid sticks) come in different colors. I am trying to polish old tools to as close to a chrome look as possible. I always used grey emery to start then white to finish, but now I have seen blue and red compounds.
Which compounds would be best for me to use?

Each one is more or less abrasive than the other. Start coarse and work your way to the finer compounds to get the desired effects.
