How to Reinvigorate Kitchen Cabinets Without Refurbishing
Oftentimes an older kitchen only needs to accent its unspoken charm. If you recently bought a new house with an older kitchen or you want to make the kitchen you've been living with a bit more pleasing and bright, you can do it without exchanging the cabinets or becoming bogged down in stripping and refinishing. Here are some suggestions on how to love what you have, and have what you enjoy.
Dated Cabinet Facelift
An older kitchen with all white cabinets and old-fashioned black and white wall and counter tile can speak about the past with retro charm. Cheerful yellow paint can brighten up this color scheme. If you're lucky enough to have curved corner shelves, outline the edge in a perky blue. You can add an open shelf trimmed in the same blue above the kitchen sink to display collectibles, coffee tins, vintage vases, and the addition of blue and white checkered curtains on kitchen windows adds retro polish. Keep the color going with brightly patterned ceramic canisters on the counter. A bare wall can be dressed up with a spice rack or a wooden shelf that is either painted blue or trimmed in blue. Whether you want to add roosters, cherries or Tuscan accents and sunflowers, this color scheme will work with a myriad of themes.
Wallet Friendly Fixes that Work
- Remember that it is much easier and hassle-free to paint cabinets that need a facelift than to strip away old paint or varnish and then refurbish the cabinet entirely. You will need to lightly sand the existing surface of the cabinet before painting. Remove all doors, drawers, and hardware beforehand and then you will be able to work on a flat surface. A roller makes the work go faster.
- Replace old cabinet fronts with glass for a quick facelift. Simply paint the interior of the cabinets with a deep shade that will allow you to showcase the contents of the cabinets.
- Perhaps the fastest and easiest update for kitchen cabinets is a quick and thoughtful change out of the cabinet hardware. This little stylistic change can inspire a whole new look and color scheme that you can continue throughout the room with changes in wall art, curtains, chair cushions and accessories. Glass knobs are ideal for hardware changes when you want to add some sparkle to a kitchen that is lifeless.
- Try a new backsplash to brighten things up. Green and white tiles add cheer to a dark kitchen. Open up the entire area and reflect light by making a backsplash from mirrors. You can have custom cut glass prepared at any glass store.
- Get rid of your upper cabinets and opt for open shelving instead. It is much more affordable to hang shelving than to buy new cabinets, and you can choose to paint new shelves or adorn them with scrolled wrought iron brackets to fit the retro theme. Open plate racks and storage let you introduce color and charm into a kitchen while also opening up the space. Bring decorative aesthetic appeal and practicality to the area by hanging cups and cooking utensils beneath the shelving.
- Be daring and go with an unexpected theme in an old kitchen: Try bold colors like yellow and mango as a backdrop for a tropical theme kitchen complete with palm tree wall art and tropical wall hangings.
Before rushing to replace or refinish cabinets look for other ways to bring color and brightness to the kitchen. Stylish wall art, wall paint, collectibles situated in different areas on the top of upper kitchen cabinets, and improved lighting can really make a huge difference in the overall aesthetic enjoyment of your kitchen.

How should I redo my room?
So my parents said I can redo my room and I can't decide what I want. Price doesn't really matter,but it can't be $400 for a pillow or something like that.
I hate girly stuff. Flowers,pink,sparkles etc. And now I don't like polka dots anymore.
I like edgy and cute stuff. I also like vintage.
I can get up to three different colors of paint. So I was thinking of painting my room white,then painting my cabinet and drawer different colors. I think you can do that.
I like black,white and turquoise color scheme but I've been thinking and I almost don't want that in my room.
I love hard/indie/alternativee rock, if that helps.
I'm not a fan of really bright colors but little accents would be fine, (ex. pillows,lights,sheets.)
I also have old highway signs like, no u turns and do not enter. Sooo yeahhh. Any ideas. I know it's a lot. If you need more info just email me..Thankss. (:
ok there is an awsome room theme that is dark dark purple and it has a darkish green. you can get window valances for it and rugs. you can do dark purple accents such as lamps and floor mats if you want. if you have a dresser it can be done in the dark green. this room theme is found @ :
if you don't like that type of theme you can do a hollywood theme. by this i mean deep natural colors like a dark red or purple, something like that. you can get opposite or matching color accents like sheets and window curtains. for a hollywood theme you can also do vintage door and window beads. for pillows i would suggest some of maybe movie stars ( for HOLLYWOOD !! ) nice largge posters of stars or of hollywood landscape photos would be an extra touch. if you have any hollywood or beverly hills license plates that would be a really vintage extra to add. I have a wallpaper that has hotspots from all around holly wood and it has film strips and stuff. i havn't used it yet because i can't deside on my room theme.
another option would be paul frank ( found at kohls.) its kind of a bad girl bedspread. by this i mean it has black and white stripes , and skulls and crossbones. not much to say about the bedspread . you can paint your dresser or desk black and maybe put some peel designs on your door,closet,and headboard on your bed. these are stencils you can purchase by many different things and you can use paint ot make it. for my old room i had a stenciled wavelike pattern around all the top of my room and on my closet door. it actually turned out pretty cool.
my last choice would be a character theme. i know they make acdc bedspreads and stuff and you could match that with blakc or red curtains and valance. you could get a red,white, or black rug. for an extra touch you could have accents of a painted desk and matching dresser. painting your door could give it a change also. to give a vintage touch you could add acdc ( or band choice/character choice ) items such as posters,bobble heads, bags, jewelry, shirts, and etc. you can hang this stuff or display it on top of your dresser etc.
character themes aren't the only way to go. if you go to walmart they have something called bed-in-a-bag. they have some pretty cool stuff. it usually comes with a bedspread,pillowcases, valance, and more !! I really hope this helps, im in the same situation !!
