It claimed the lives of 1836 men, women and children. The estimated total cost in damage is believed to be in the region of 81 billion US dollars. As the list of missing or dead grew, the number of evacuees also increased to uncontrollable proportions. “Refuges of last resort” were established for those who could not escape the area and 26000 people were packed into the Louisiana Superdome and had to shelter there in some pretty dour conditions. The New Orleans mayor at the time referred to the cyclone as “a storm that most of us have feared for a long time”.

Being prepared

leaky basement?

our basement leaks in 1 corner. we pulled the sheet rock down to see where the leak was coming from but we can't tell.
the leak is in the corner that attaches to the garage and the front wall of the house. we can't go on the outside to see if there is a crack in wall or to even try to put a seal on the wall becasue the leak is behind the porch which is poured cement and is huge. the leak looks like its coming in on the garage side because behind the sheet rock all that brick is moldy and was wet the floor is also wet there, but not sure if its coming in thru the bricks or under them. so how would we try to fix this leak if we are not sure where its coming from. it only comes in on really heavy rains or when the snow melts.

Sorry to hear about your leaking basement! I bought a house last June that smelled somewhat musty and moldy. The old owners swore up and down that they never had water in the basement. Guess what...the first weekend after we moved in, we had a couple of inches of water in the basement! It seemed like it was coming up from the floor. Before you spend lots of money calling a basement waterproofer, make sure that your sump pump works and carries the water away from the house. I found that my sump pump line ended in a flower bed and was covered over with mulch. I also found that the back downspout went into a pipe in the ground. I did some investigation and found that the pipe didn't actually take the water away from the house, but basically let all of the water from the roof flow next to the foundation. Once I fixed these two things for about $20, my basement has been totally dry. Bottom line, get the water away from the house! Try the inexpensive things first before calling in an "expert"
